Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (8/26/25): Giants 5, Cubs 2 – Bats Cold on Summer Night in San Francisco
The Cubs and Giants got their series underway on a cool Tuesday night at Oracle Park. Chicago had another disappointing performance from the hitters as they dropped the opener by the bay.
San Francisco struck first when Wilmer Flores hit a solo homer off Matthew Boyd in the bottom of the 2nd. The North Siders answered back with an RBI single by Matt Shaw against the veteran Justin Verlander to the game in the 4th.
Carson Kelly gave the Cubs a lead with a run-scoring single in the top of the 5th inning to make it 2-1. The Giants wasted no time answering back in the bottom of the frame with an RBI double by Heliot Ramos and a bloop single by Rafael Devers to move the home team ahead 3-2.
Boyd was not his sharpest on Tuesday, and Matt Chapman sent him to the showers with a two-run homer in the bottom of the 6th that gave the home team a 5-2 advantage. Chicago could not muster anything against the Giants’ bullpen and would lose by that same margin. (Box score)
Key Moment
Chapman’s homer put the Cubs in a hole they weren’t going to climb out of with the way they were hitting in this game.
Why the Cubs Lost
The bats were cold and the starting pitcher had a rare shaky performance.
Stats That Matter
- Boyd was not horrible, but he made a couple of mistakes that got hammered: 5.1 IP, 5 R, 6 H, 8 K, 3 BB.
- Pete Crow-Armstrong had a single and a double.
Bottom Line
The Cubs lineup continues to be in the doldrums, leaving them vulnerable when their pitching has an off night. With Chicago’s playoff chances looking very good, the goal for the next month should be to try and get the offense rolling. If they could make that happen, they would be a very dangerous team in October.
On Deck
Game two of the series is Wednesday night at 8:45pm CT. Colin Rea takes the mound against Carson Whisenhunt in a broadcast available on Marquee and 670 The Score.
