Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (8/10/25): Cardinals 3, Cubs 2 – Offense Vanishes Again in One-Run Loss

The Cubs and the Cardinals met in the finale of their series after an hour-long rain delay at Busch Stadium Sunday night. It was a close contest, and in the end, Chicago didn’t execute when they needed to and St. Louis took a one-run victory.

The Cards went ahead in the bottom of the 3rd when catcher Pedro Páges hit a two-run homer off of Shōta Imanaga. The North Siders got those runs back when Matt Shaw hit a two-run shot against Sonny Gray in the top of the 5th.

Both starting pitchers did an outstanding job, but it was the Cardinals who broke the tie on an RBI single by Nolan Gorman in the bottom of the 7th. While the Cubs got two runners on base in each of the final two innings, they could not get a clutch hit to even the score, and the home team won 3-2. (Box score)

Key Moment

Pinch-runner Jon Berti was caught stealing with one out in the top of the 9th. The play at second base was incredibly close, but replay upheld the call. The next two Chicago batters got hits; however, they failed to score.

Why the Cubs Lost

The feast or famine offense was back to famine Sunday and wasted a good pitching effort.

Stats That Matter

  • Imanaga was outstanding and deserved a better fate: 6.2 IP, 3 R, 4 H, 9 K, 0 BB.
  • Nico Hoerner and Dansby Swanson each had a pair of singles Saturday.
  • The Cardinals picked off two runners in this game.

Bottom Line

The Cubs continue to be inconsistent in the second half; they are winning enough to avoid a real slide, but the malaise has lasted long enough to become a concern. The entire roster needs a spark to get things going.

On Deck
