Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (8/6/25): Cubs 6, Reds 1 – Horton, Homers Prevent Sweep

The Cubs and Reds met in the finale of their series at sunny Wrigley Field Wednesday afternoon. Chicago was the beneficiary of a power surge that allowed them to salvage a win and avoid the sweep.

The North Siders struck first against Andrew Abbott in the bottom of the 3rd with a sacrifice fly by Seiya Suzuki. Cade Horton did a great job yet again Wednesday, throwing 5.2 scoreless innings to protect the 1-0 lead.

Suzuki added some insurance with a solo home run off of Abbott in the bottom of the 6th. Dansby Swanson hit his own homer in the 7th and Carson Kelly provided an RBI single to put the Cubs on top 4-0.

Chicago continued to increase the margin with an Ian Happ dinger and a run-scoring single by Nico Hoerner that made it 6-0 in the 8th. Cincinnati scored a single run in the 9th inning, but the home team was victorious 6-1. (Box score)

Key Moment

The offense finally erupted in the late innings to add crucial insurance and take the pressure off of the bullpen.

Why the Cubs Won

Terrific starting pitching and three home runs were more than enough to put together a victory.

Stats That Matter

  • Horton has thrown 23.1 consecutive shutout frames, but Chicago is being very careful with his innings: 5.2 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 6 K, 0 BB.
  • Suzuki had two hits and a walk with two RBIs.
  • Justin Turner had a pair of hits, including a double on Wednesday.
  • Andrew Kittredge had an immaculate 7th inning with three strikeouts on nine pitches.

Bottom Line

The Cubs once again avoided a losing streak and have not been swept all season long. Even when they are playing far from their best baseball, they are maintaining their record. It’s frustrating that Horton is being held back, but it will be worth it if the result is a serious playoff run.

On Deck

After a day off on Thursday, the Cubs head to St. Louis for a series against the Cardinals starting Friday at 7:15pm CT. Matthew Boyd gets the start against Michael McGreevy in a game broadcast on MLB Network and Marquee with a radio feed on 670 The Score.
