Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (7/19/25): Cubs 6, Red Sox 0 – Solo Homers Key W

The Cubs and Red Sox met in the second game of three at a muggy Wrigley Field Saturday night. Chicago put up a barrage of solo homers and won going away to take the series.

Boston began the game with a double, but Shōta Imanaga stranded the runner at third after a pair of strikeouts. The North Siders got off to another quick start when Michael Busch and Kyle Tucker hit back-to-back solo home runs against Brayan Bello in the bottom of the 1st to go in front 2-0.

The Cubs added an insurance run on a sacrifice fly by Vidal Bruján in the bottom of the 2nd to increase the lead to 3-0. Imanaga was terrific on Saturday, throwing seven scoreless innings and keeping the Red Sox hitters quiet.

Pinch-hitter Matt Shaw hit a solo dinger off of left-handed reliever Chris Murphy to bring Chicago’s advantage to 4-0 in the 7th. Pete Crow-Armstrong and Ian Happ did more damage with back-to-back homers against Murphy in the 8th that made it 6-0.

The bullpen finished off the final two frames to secure the shutout for the home team. (Box score)

Key Moment

The Red Sox failing to score after beginning the game with a double proved to be very costly when the Cubs jumped ahead in the bottom of the 1st.

Why the Cubs Won

An outstanding starting pitching performance and tons of power is an excellent combination if you’re trying to win baseball games.

Stats That Matter

  • Two excellent starts in a row by Imanaga: 7 IP, 0 R, 5 H, 5 K, 1 BB.
  • PCA had a single and a stolen base in addition to the homer.
  • Shaw also had a hard-hit single after the pinch-hit homer.
  • Busch continues to impress at the top of the order.

Bottom Line

The Cubs continue to play great at Wrigley Field and are now 20 games above the .500 mark for the first time since 2018. Even if the Brewers keep rolling, Chicago will be in excellent shape as long as they keep winning series. It’s great to see Imanaga returning to his All-Star form after suffering the hamstring injury, which is a big boost for the stretch run.
