Cubs Recall Nate Pearson, DFA Génesis Cabrera
The Génesis Cabrera experiment has come to an end. After allowing a three-run home run in his second straight appearance, the Cubs have designated him for assignment. Cabrera posted an 8.68 ERA during his time in Chicago, allowing four home runs over nine outings. His 2.65 HR/9 could only last so long on a major league roster, although we’ll see if he lands somewhere else after his departure from the Cubs.
As the corresponding move, Nate Pearson is back in the big leagues. He has a 2.22 ERA with the Iowa Cubs this season, including 29 strikeouts in 24.1 innings.
Say what you want to about Nate Pearson's start to the season. It wasn't great when he first arrived in Iowa either, but something clicked in May.
He has allowed two runs in his last 16 appearances. 25 K's and 12 walks in the last 21.0 IP. Fastball sitting 98-99 mph.

He’s also increased his slider usage, which is something to watch as he transitions back into Craig Counsell‘s bullpen. He wasn’t using his curveball or sinker much at the beginning of the season, so focusing on two main pitches seems like an ideal solution.
Since May 21st, Nate Pearson has ratcheted up his slider usage. It’s over 60% in that time. The slider is his best pitch and racks up whiffs about 33%.
He’s also slimmed down arsenal, effectively only throwing FB/SL.
Pearson has looked good and Cubs could use another live arm. https://t.co/gKVY0U5GMi— Greg Zumach (@IvyFutures) June 21, 2025
