Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (6/8/25): Tigers 4, Cubs 0 – Cubs Don’t Get Jack in Series Finale Loss

The Cubs and Tigers met in the deciding game of their series at Comerica Park on Sunday afternoon. Detroit went ahead early and never gave up their advantage, winning via shutout.

Spencer Torkelson hit a two-run double off of Cade Horton in the bottom of the 1st to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead. Jack Flaherty was very sharp early and did not allow a baserunner through the first three frames.

The Cubs’ best scoring chance came in the top of the 4th inning, but Ian Happ got thrown out at the plate on a single by Pete Crow-Armstrong. Riley Greene singled home a pair of runners against Horton in the bottom of the 5th to double Detroit’s margin to 4-0.

Chicago did not generate much of anything after that and went down to defeat by the same 4-0 total. (Box score)

Key Moment

The North Siders had three walks and a single in the 4th inning but were unable to score a run. That was by far their best chance in the game to generate offense.

Why the Cubs Lost

The hitters just couldn’t break through against a very good Tigers pitching staff.

Stats That Matter

  • Horton was fine on Sunday but not good enough to stick with Flaherty: 5 IP, 4 R, 7 H, 6 K, 2 BB.
  • Nico Hoerner and Craig Counsell got ejected by home plate umpire Derek Thomas after an egregiously bad called third strike in the 5th inning.
  • Dansby Swanson had a double and a single for two of the four Cubs’ hits.

Bottom Line

Chicago finally lost a series, but it was to the best team in baseball in Detroit. The Cubs very nearly took home a win on Friday that would have given them the series. If they take two out of three in Philadelphia they will have a winning road trip, which would be very acceptable.

On Deck

The aforementioned set against the Phillies begins Monday at 5:45pm CT. Matthew Boyd is on the mound against Zack Wheeler in a contest broadcast on Marquee with a radio feed on 670 The Score.
