Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (2/25/25): Cubs 4, D-Backs 2 – PCA Steals Win
The Cubs kept on winning Tuesday afternoon at Sloan Park against the Diamondbacks, literally running their record to 6-0. Pete Crow-Armstrong was the difference maker in this one, using his legs to create the go-ahead run.
Jameson Taillon made his first start of the spring and gave up a 2nd-inning home run to Geraldo Perdomo to give Arizona a 1-0 advantage. The road team pushed across another tally in the top of the 5th to make it 2-0.
Chicago evened the score in the bottom of the frame when Carson Kelly and Vidal Bruján hit back-to-back home runs off of Kyle Nelson. PCA then did his magic in the 6th to give the Cubs the lead. He stole second base and advanced to third when the throw leaked into the outfield. When the infielder bobbled the ball one more time, the speedy outfielder broke for home and beat the throw in a play reminiscent of the electrifying player he was traded for.
The North Siders tacked on one additional run in the bottom of the 8th and went on to take home a 4-2 victory. (Box score)
Key Moment
Crow-Armstrong demonstrated once again why he is a scoring threat every time he reaches base. The rest of the hitters in the 6th inning did nothing, yet the winning run still scored thanks to the pressure his speed put on the defense.
Why the Cubs Won
The pitching did a nice job keeping them in the game and giving the offense enough time to push across a couple of runs.
Stats That Matter
- Taillon was fine other than the homer on Tuesday: 2 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 2 K, and 0 BB.
- Kyle Tucker had three walks in three plate appearances.
- Julian Merryweather looked very sharp with two strikeouts in a perfect inning.
Bottom Line
Pretty much everyone has now seen some game action for the Cubs this spring. They have to ramp up quicker with the Japan trip looming, so don’t expect to see as much prospect action as there normally would be in a typical spring training.
On Deck
The Cubs head to Scottsdale for a matchup with the Giants on Wednesday at 2:05pm CT. Shōta Imanaga makes his first start in a game that is unfortunately not being televised.
