Chicago Cubs Lineup (9/14/24): Wisdom at 1B, Taillon Starting

I’ll be honest with you up front here, I’m half-assing this one because I really don’t care at all about this game. The Cubs have almost been officially eliminated from playoff contention and the Rockies might be the least interesting team in baseball. Others have worse records, but I find zero compelling about this squad with Kris Bryant on the IL.

Jameson Taillon is on the hill and the lineup is nearly the same as usual save for Patrick Wisdom getting the start at first and Christian Bethancourt catching. Taillon has allowed just one run over his last two starts, so it seems likely the offense won’t be tasked with scoring double digits tonight. Wisdom is in there because the Rox are starting lefty Kyle Freeland, who has been a pretty consistent performer in Colorado over the years.

He doesn’t pitch to big splits overall, but right-handed batters have accounted for all 14 homers he’s allowed. Only four of those have come at Coors Field, however, and lefty batters have a .292 average against him at home compared to .238 from righties. Now, the samples aren’t exactly equal since opposing managers stack righties when Freeland pitches.

The Mets are losing to the Phillies in the bottom of the 7th as of publication, so the Cubs could pick up a game in the Wild Card with a win. First pitch from Denver is at 7:10pm CT on Marquee and 670 The Score.
