Adbert Alzolay to Undergo UCL Reconstruction

Word first came out last week that Adbert Alzolay would require surgery on his right arm, but no specifics were shared because the reliever was seeking a second opinion. As I had theorized at the time, it sounded like a matter of determining whether to undergo full UCL reconstruction or the newer internal brace procedure that typically requires less rehab time. As Craig Counsell shared with media members Wednesday, it sounds as though Alzolay will need the former.

This is a big blow and could mean the former closer will miss the entire 2025 season as he works back from the procedure. Alzolay still has two years of club control remaining, but this situation puts the Cubs in something of a predicament when it comes to the 40-man roster. By that I mean they can’t stash him on the 60-day IL between the end of season and spring training.

Maybe enough other guys will fall off to accommodate new additions and prospects who need to be protected from the Rule 5 Draft, but I’ll be shocked if Alzolay isn’t non-tendered. That really sucks for him on a number of levels, especially since he’s missed a lot of time to various injuries previously in his career. Here’s to hoping he sticks around one way or the other and bounces back better than ever to have an impact in the bullpen.
