Report: Cubs DFA Yan Gomes, Sign Tomás Nido
As first reported by Michael Cerami of Bleacher Nation, the Cubs are designating Yan Gomes for assignment and replacing him with former Mets backstop Tomás Nido. As noted here more than once, Gomes is among the worst catchers in the league in terms of offensive performance and has also fallen off behind the plate. Nido, who was DFA’d by the Mets last week and released this week, has a 79 wRC+ and strong defensive metrics.
This may not be the sexiest move they could have made, but it’s undoubtedly an upgrade for a team that has gotten very poor performance from its catchers this season. As much as it sucks on a personal level because Gomes was such a good dude, it was necessary if the Cubs want to have any shot at a playoff push.
