Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (6/4/24): Cubs 7, White Sox 6 – Thunderous Comeback Leads to Win

The start of the Cubs game against the White Sox at Wrigley Field Tuesday appeared like it would be another disaster for the home side, as they fell into a 5-0 hole after four innings. Things seemed to flip after a short rain delay, however, and the North Siders stormed back to eventually grab an unlikely 7-6 victory.

Shōta Imanaga appeared much sharper than his last outing, with five early strikeouts. The wheels came off in the top of the 4th with the help of some shaky defense from third baseman Christopher Morel.

Morel couldn’t come up with a backhanded attempt on a grounder that should have become a double play.The error allowed a run to score and put men on second and third with nobody out. Korey Lee then whacked a double into the left-field corner to score both of those runners. Imanaga followed that up by catching too much of the plate with a splitter that Lenyn Sosa crushed for a long two-run homer that put the Sox ahead by five.

A thunderstorm passed over Wrigley in the top of the 5th that held things up by about a half an hour. When the action resumed, Dansby Swanson doubled off of starter Chris Flexen to bring home Ian Happ and cut the deficit to 5-1.

It was the 6th inning where the Cubs really roared back to life in this one. Morel jumped on a first pitch slider from reliever Justin Anderson and blasted a two-run homer to make it a 5-3 score. Lefty Tanner Banks took over for the White Sox and allowed a single to Happ before pinch-hitter Patrick Wisdom muscled an outside changeup into the basket in center field to tie the game.

The South Siders wasted no time responding when Luis Robert Jr., just activated off the injured list, blasted a go-ahead solo shot against Hayden Wesneski in the 7th and it was 6-5, White Sox. A walk and an infield single put two on with one out for Happ in the 8th. The Cubs left fielder yanked a double into the corner in right that scored both runs and put the home team on top 7-6.

Héctor Neris was able to earn the save with the help of a pick-off play that nailed the potential tying run at second base and sealed a huge win. (Box score)

Key Moment

When Happ doubled off Jordan Leasure in the 8th it was eerily similar to the play on Friday when Nick Madrigal was thrown out trying to score from first on a Seiya Suzuki double in the 9th inning. Luckily for the Cubs, Morel was the runner this time and got a much better jump, which allowed him to score easily with his superior speed.

Why the Cubs Won

The offense did its job and overcame the early deficit with the help of some much needed power. The bullpen was able to limit any real damage after taking over for Shōta.

Stats That Matter

  • Imanaga did not get much help from his defense but he also gave up some really hard contact: 4.1 IP, 5 R, 1 ER, 7 H, 6 K, and 1 BB.
  • Morel’s defense is a problem but it hurts less when he hits home runs and makes great plays on the bases like he did Tuesday.
  • Happ is officially getting hot at the plate and the Cubs really need him to keep it up.

Bottom Line

Craig Counsell‘s squad was able to avoid what would’ve been a disastrous loss to a very bad team. That said, it was hardly a pretty win and the Cubs have a lot of improvement to make if they want to start to string victories together. If there is a positive development, it’s the fact some of the ice cold bats are starting to come to life.
