Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (3/13/24): Cubs 8, Guardians 3 – Homer Party Keys Lopsided Score

The Cubs traveled to Goodyear for a matchup with the Guardians on Wednesday afternoon and put on a power display. Chicago cracked four home runs against Cleveland pitching as they won going away.

Catcher Miguel Amaya started things off with a bang, hitting a grand slam against Tanner Bibee to make it 4-0 Cubs in the top of the 1st inning. Garrett Cooper continued his strong spring with a solo shot in the 2nd.

Kyle Hendricks had a solid start, allowing a single run at the end of his outing in the bottom of the 4th. Patrick Wisdom hit a two-run bomb in the following half inning, his second dinger in as many days, to increase Chicago’s advantage to 7-1.

José Ramirez connected for his own two-run shot off of Héctor Neris as Cleveland cut the deficit to four in the bottom of the 5th. David Bote finished off the scoring with a solo blast in the 7th as the Cubs won 8-3. (Box score)

Why the Cubs Won

An outburst of home run power drove the victory on Wednesday, most notably the grand slam in the opening frame.

Stats That Matter

  • Cooper had three hits as he makes a strong push for a roster spot.
  • Wisdom is also working to secure his role with two hits of his own.
  • Amaya is going to play a big part as the backup catcher this season, so it’s good to see him providing some power.

Bottom Line

There is getting to be quite an interesting battle for the final couple of spots on the Cubs bench as the team decides between several different options. Having more useful hitters in camp than roster spots for them is a good problem to have.
