Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (2/25/24): Padres 7, Cubs 0 – Cubs Blanked on Belli Day
The Cubs got very good news overnight on Sunday when Cody Bellinger agreed to return on a three-year deal. In a much less important development, Chicago suffered their first loss of spring training dropping a game at Sloan Park to the Padres.
It was a tough start for Javier Assad as the bespectacled right-hander surrendered three runs in 1.2 innings pitched. The Cubs had numerous regulars in the lineup but could get nothing going against San Diego’s pitchers.
The Padres kept adding to their lead, eventually building it all the way up to 7-0. Chicago never really rallied even with the players from minor-league camp late in the game and took the shutout loss. (Box score)
Why the Cubs Lost
Absolutely nothing was happening on offense. They could really use a little more power in the lineup maybe from the left-hand side, perhaps like a Bellinger type.
Stats That Matter
- Christopher Morel drew a walk and made a terrific defensive play at third base as he tries to earn the starting job at the hot corner.
- Starting catcher Yan Gomes singled in his spring debut.
Bottom Line
The Bellinger signing clearly is more important than anything that happened on the field Sunday. It really solidifies the lineup and should make the Cubs a real threat in the NL Central
On Deck
The Cubs head to Surprise to take on the Royals Monday afternoon at 2:05pm CT. Hayden Wesneski takes the mound and an audio feed of the game is available on Cubs.com.
