Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (3/28/23): Cubs 8, White Sox 5 – The Kids Are Alright
Tuesday was the final game of the 2023 Cactus League season and the White Sox were back at Sloan Park to face a Cubs lineup loaded with prospects. The youngsters were able to pull off a comeback win to finish spring training on a high note.
Drew Smyly got the start and was not good Tuesday. The lefty gave up a ton of hard contact, including two home runs, and allowed five runs in four innings. B.J. Murray doubled home a pair in the 2nd inning but the Cubs trailed 5-2 going into the 5th.
That is when the North Siders exploded and scored five in the inning. Luis Vázquez launched a two-run homer and Owen Caissie plated two more with a single to take the lead. A Miguel Amaya sacrifice fly and a RBI single from Kevin Alcántara wrapped up the offense in the Cubs victory. (Box score)
Why the Cubs Won
The big 5th inning was the difference in the game Tuesday.
Stats That Matter
- Hopefully Smyly got that performance out of his system: 4 IP, 5 R, 10 H, 3 K, and 1 BB.
- Hard-throwing lefty Bailey Horn struck out four batters in two innings Tuesday.
Bottom Line
It was fun to see the Cubs’ future on Tuesday but I think I speak for most when I say, “Bring on the regular season!”
On Deck
