Cubs Add Sergio Alcántara on Minors Deal, Paving Way for Another D-backs Reunion
The Cubs have signed infielder Sergio Alcántara to a minor league contract as they work to add depth to the system. This continues an on-again, off-again relationship that began in February of 2021 when the Cubs claimed him off waivers from Detroit. He played in 89 games between a pair of designations for assignment and was traded to Arizona for cash considerations in March of this year.
That was actually Alcántara’s second stint with Arizona, the team that signed him as an international free agent for $700,000 back in 2012. He was traded to Detroit as part of the J.D. Martinez deal five years later and stuck around for four years before the Cubs picked him up. Following that trade to Arizona, Alcántara was DFA’d and claimed by the Padres, who then DFA’d him. He was picked up by, you guessed it, the Diamondbacks.
This probably won’t be a move of any consequence, but feel free to complain about the Cubs being cheap or only picking up players like this if it helps you feel better.
