Cubs Working on Drew Smyly Reunion
According to ESPN’s Jesse Rogers, the Cubs are nearing a deal to bring lefty Drew Smyly back to the pitching staff. The two sides had met shortly after the season to work out a new deal after declining a $10 million mutual option on his initial contract, but there was a little doubt about it getting done when things went unresolved.
Smyly’s role is very much up in the air with Jameson Taillon in the rotation as well, so it’s possible the Cubs could use him as a swingman or long reliever. They may also choose to go with a six-man unit because most of the probable starters have had issues going deep into games and racking up innings over the course of the season.
More on this as it becomes available.
