Cubs Activate Manny Rodríguez, Option Kervin Castro to AAA
The Cubs have reinstated right-handed pitcher Manuel Rodríguez from the 60-day injured list and optioned right-handed pitcher Kervin Castro to Triple-A Iowa. To make room on the 40-man roster for Rodríguez, right-handed pitcher Alec Mills has been transferred to the 60-day injured list.
Rodríguez began the year at Triple-A Iowa before being recalled and placed on the IL with a right elbow strain on June 1. He registered one save with a 1.50 ERA and 12 strikeouts against two walks in five outings during rehab assignments with the ACL Cubs and Iowa from August 9-24. For the season, he owns a 1-0 record with one save and a 5.63 ERA in seven minor league relief appearances.
The Mérida, México native is in his sixth season in the Cubs organization after being signed as an undrafted free agent on July 21, 2016. He made his major league debut last season, appearing in 20 games out of the bullpen and going 3-3 with one save and a 6.11 ERA.
Castro, 22, is 0-1 with a 10.22 ERA in 10 relief appearances between the Cubs and San Francisco Giants this season.
Mills was placed on the 15-day injured list on July 3 with a low back strain. He has an 0-1 record and a 9.68 ERA in seven appearances (two starts) with the Cubs.
