Kyle Hendricks Still 2-3 Weeks from Playing Catch
Kyle Hendricks went on the IL following his short start on July 5 due to shoulder tightness similar to what he experienced in early June. A subsequent MRI revealed no structural damage, but David Ross said Wednesday that the righty will remain shelved for a “little bit.” The manager clarified that it will be at least another 2-3 weeks before Hendricks even plays catch again.
The 32-year-old is having his worst season by nearly every statistical measure and has been burned by homers with alarming frequency, but all indications were that there would be a market for his services. That may have just fallen apart, as even hitting the optimistic side of that timeline would keep him out of live action until after the August 2 trade deadline. Unless, of course, the Cubs are willing to move him in a conditional deal.
Hendricks still has another guaranteed year on his deal valued at $14 million actual money and $13.875 million AAV, then he’s got a $16 million club option with a $1.5 buyout. That’s very reasonable for a contending team looking for another starter to round out the rotation, but a team with little intent to contend over the next 18 months or so might not see the wisdom in the investment.
Whatever happens, it’ll be great to see The Professor back healthy and shoving at some point in the near future, even if it’s not with the Cubs.
