Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (7/5/22): Cubs 8, Brewers 3 – Suzuki Mashes, Hendricks Leaves Game with Shoulder Soreness

The Cubs looked to bounce back from a tough loss against the Brewers on Monday. They were able to do just that, despite another injury, and slugged out a victory.

Milwaukee struck first against Kyle Hendricks in the bottom of the 1st with a two-run home run from Rowdy Tellez. Hendricks was not sharp and was pulled after just three innings.

After an RBI ground-out cut the lead in half in the 3rd, the Cubs stormed ahead in the top of the 4th. Ian Happ doubled to tie the game and then Seiya Suzuki hit a line drive two-run dinger down the left-field line.

Chicago did more damage to Brewers starter Jason Alexander in the 6th inning. Rafael Ortega doubled in a pair of runs and would eventually steal home as part of a double steal. Suzuki would then knock in the runner from second to put his team up 8-2.

Cubs reliever Matt Swarmer, who took over for Hendricks, walked the bases loaded with nobody out in the bottom of the frame but Rowan Wick was able to keep Milwaukee off the board with the help of a double play.

The Brewers did nothing from that point and the Cubs sealed the 8-3 win. (Box score)

Why the Cubs Won

They were able to put together a couple of sustained rallies and post a crooked number in two innings.

Eye on the Future

• Nelson Velázquez had a hit and a run scored and also showed off his absolute cannon arm in centerfield.
• Suzuki had a great game putting good swings on the ball all day.

Stats That Matter

• Hendricks left the game with right shoulder soreness, no word on the severity.
• Ortega got on base three times and continued to look very good.
• The Cubs bullpen was strong, going six and allowing just a run Tuesday.

Bottom Line

Chicago is definitely playing better, which is great to see. Suzuki seems to be back in a groove coming off his IL stint.
