Alec Mills Activated from 60-Day IL, Will Work in Relief
The Cubs have reinstated right-handed pitcher Alec Mills from the 60-day injured list and optioned right-handed pitcher Anderson Espinoza to Double-A Tennessee. Mills has not pitched for the Cubs this season after being placed on the 10-day IL back on April 7 with a low back strain and then being transferred to the 60-day injured list May 19 with a left quadriceps strain.
In three rehab outings with Triple-A Iowa from May 22-June 1, he posted a 3.72 ERA with three walks and six strikeouts. David Ross told the media Tuesday that Mills would be working out of the bullpen, so he will be available for the games in Baltimore.
This provides the Cubs with more pitching depth at a time when they desperately need it in the wake of several injuries and having just playing nine games in seven days.
