Cubs Place Seiya Suzuki on IL, DFA Robert Gsellman, Recall Brandon Hughes
The Cubs made some roster moves Monday aimed at helping out their pitching staff in the midst of a very busy stretch of games. Seiya Suzuki has been placed on the IL retroactive to May 27 with sprained left ring finger and lefty reliever Brandon Hughes has been recalled from Triple-A Iowa. In order to make room for Hughes on the 40-man roster, multi-inning reliever Robert Gsellman has been designated for assignment.
The 26-year-old Hughes has a 2.57 ERA with one walk and nine strikeouts in five relief appearances for the Cubs after he was selected as a replacement player from Iowa on May 17. He struck out five batters and walked one in 1.2 innings in his debut, becoming the fourth Cubs reliever since 1901 to record five-plus strikeouts in their big league debut. Hughes was returned to Iowa on May 28, so this wasn’t quite a Schwindelian turnaround.
Gsellman was 0-2 with a 4.70 ERA in eight relief appearances for Chicago, including three walks and nine strikeouts.
