Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (5/13/22): D-Backs 4, Cubs 3 – Early Cubs Lead a Desert Mirage
The Cubs opened up a three-game set with the Diamondbacks Friday night in Arizona. More poor fundamental play lead to another Chicago defeat.
A three-run 3rd inning Cubs rally began with Jason Heyward double off of ex-teammate Zach Davies. Jonathan Villar hit a bunt single set up a hard-hit two-run Ildemaro Vargas triple and he came in on a Rafael Ortega sacrifice fly.
The D-Backs stormed back immediately in the bottom of the frame to tie it. Ketel Marte and Pavin Smith doubled in runs during the comeback and a Drew Smyly wild pitch put Arizona ahead in the 4th.
The Cubs got one more glorious chance to tie the score but left the bases loaded in the 8th inning and dropped the game. (Box score)
Why the Cubs Lost
The defense was sloppy again a big problem so far this season. The bigger issue, however, is still the bats going quiet late in games.
Key Moment
An error and two walks loaded the bases for Alfonso Rivas with two outs in the top of the 8th. Ian Kennedy induced Rivas to fly to center to preserve the 4-3 Arizona lead.
Stats That Matter
- Smyly was solid and did not get much defensive help: 6 IP, 4 R, 10 H, 4 K, and 1 BB.
- Frank Schwindel had his first two hit game of the year.
Bottom Line
Injuries and a lack of depth is forcing the Cubs to field a very ugly team at the moment and it’s not very fun to watch.
On Deck
Game two of the series is Saturday night at 8:10pm CT. Kyle Hendricks takes on Arizona’s dynamo Zac Gallen in a game airing on Marquee Sports Network and 670 The Score.
