Cubs Place Jason Heyward on 7-Day Concussion IL, Promote Trayce Thompson

The Cubs have placed Jason Heyward on the seven-day concussion injured list (retroactive to September 12) as a result of a collision he suffered sliding into third base Sunday. He was visibly shaken up and was lifted from the game, but let’s hope it’s all just precautionary.

Trayce Thompson — younger brother of NBA star Klay and son of former Lakers star Mychal — was selected from Triple-A Iowa to take Heyward’s spot on the roster and Michael Hermosillo has been transferred to the 60-day injured list to make room on the 40-man for Thompson. The former Dodger will wear uniform number 43 and is available for Tuesday’s game against the Phillies.

Thompson, 30, was acquired by Chicago from Arizona on May 11 for a cash consideration and has hit .233 with 21 homers, 14 doubles, 63 RBI, and a .344 on-base percentage. He has been on fire lately, hitting five homers in the last five games.

Thompson last appeared in the majors with the White Sox in 2018 and has batted .206 with 22 home runs, 24 doubles and 59 RBI over 589 plate appearances in parts of four seasons. His most extensive playing time came in 2016 with the Dodgers, when he and his team were eliminated in the NLCS by a team that eventually went on to win the World Series.

Hermosillo landed on the 10-day IL on September 8 with a left forearm strain after hitting .194 with three homers, two doubles, and seven RBI in 16 games for the Cubs.
