Cubs Place Brad Wieck on IL with Irregular Heartbeat, Recall Kyle Ryan, Activate Ryan Tepera, Option Cory Abbott
The Cubs announced Friday that they have placed lefty reliever Brad Wieck on the IL with an irregular heartbeat, which is something he’s dealt with in the past. Wieck underwent a cardiac ablation procedure in February of 2020 to correct an atrial flutter discovered during a pre-spring training physical, then made it back to pitch in just one game before a hamstring issue curtailed his season.
This is obviously much bigger than baseball and it’s concerning that the issue has come up again, so let’s just hope Wieck is able to find a solution and get back to living a full life. It would be great if he’s able to pitch again, but that’s secondary.
Kyle Ryan has been recalled to take the spot on the roster.
In other bullpen moves, Ryan Tepera has been activated from the IL after a minimum stay with a calf issue that cropped up after a pair of poor performances. Corey Abbott was optioned back to Triple-A to clear space.
Get ready for plenty more shuffling as the Cubs start to move players over the next few weeks.
