Cubs Place David Bote on IL, Select Sergio Alcántara, DFA Tyson Miller
The Cubs have placed David Bote on the 10-day injured list with a dislocated left shoulder suffered in Saturday’s win over the Reds. In order to take his place on the roster, they have selected infielder Sergio Alcántara — who you may remember being mentioned as a potential Nico Hoerner replacement — from Triple-A Iowa. Because Alcántara was not on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Tyson Miller has been designated for assignment.
The switch-hitting Alcántara, 24, was hitting .328 with two doubles, two home runs, six RBI in 20 games for the I-Cubs this season. He had a .481 on-base percentage and a .940 OPS, drawing 18 walks and striking out 16 times. He can handle both shortstop and second base, with the possibility of playing third should the Cubs need it.
Alcántara debuted last year for the Tigers and didn’t do much in very limited action, but he was heralded as having the “best infield arm” in Detroit’s system after the 2019 season.
Miller recently returned from the COVID IL and posted a 5.06 ERA in three games (one start) for Iowa this season. He made his major league debut in 2020, appearing in two games (one start) for the Cubs with no record and a 5.40 ERA (3 ER/5.0 IP).
