Cubs Place Jake Marisnick on IL, Recall Brad Wieck

The Cubs announced Tuesday that they have placed outfielder Jake Marisnick on the 10-day injured list retroactive to May 10 with a right hamstring strain. He sustained the injury while running down a pop fly that eventually landed for a soft single in the frustrating 1st inning of Sunday’s loss.

It’ll be tough to fill the void left by Marisnick, who is hitting .264 with three doubles, two triples, four home runs, and 14 RBI in 27 games. He has played much better than anticipated and was serving in more of an everyday role due to other injuries.

With the DH in play as the Cubs open a swing through Cleveland and Detroit, and with both Ian Happ and Nico Hoerner eligible to return Friday, the team is opting for a short bench. They also get yet another day off Thursday between these two AL cities, so that helps.

Left-handed pitcher Brad Wieck has been recalled from Triple-A Iowa for his second stint with the big club this season. He previously threw a scoreless inning of relief against the Brewers on April 12 before being optioned back to the alternate site two days later. Wieck’s most recent action came with the I-Cubs as part of a combined no-hitter as he struck out five with no walks and no hits allowed over two innings.

The Cubs have really loaded up on lefties in the bullpen, with Andrew Chafin, Justin Steele, and Rex Brothers already on the roster. The towering Wieck has pitched to reverse splits in the past and could be a very nice re-addition if he’s able to command his stuff.
