Jake Arrieta, Nico Hoerner to IL as Cubs Make Several Moves Tuesday
The Cubs made a flurry of moves Tuesday morning, highlighted by Jake Arrieta heading to the IL with a right thumb abrasion. Nico Hoerner is also being shelved following a left forearm strain suffered during his collision with Ian Happ. Reliever Dan Winkler has likewise been placed on the IL with right triceps tendinitis.
Arrieta was shelled in Cincinnati his last time out and mentioned the thumb issue afterwards, so this is clearly something that’s been bothering him and wasn’t going to be healed by the time he was set to take his next turn. Hoerner should be fine in a few days as well, though it’s impossible to know for certain after that frightening tumble in Sunday’s loss.

In order to fill out the roster, the Cubs have recalled lefty Kyle Ryan and righty Keegan Thompson — who will start Tuesday’s second game — and have also called up Ildemaro Vargas. This isn’t a great development when it comes to the Cubs’ depth, which wasn’t necessarily great to begin with, so let’s hope everything is resolved quickly.
