Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (9/13/20): Cubs 12, Brewers 0 – Alec Mills Throws No-hitter in Blowout Win
There were many possible outcomes to Sunday’s game at Miller Park. Perhaps the least likely of those was an Alec Mills no-hitter, but baseball is always full of surprises.
Both starters were sharp early on and the game was scoreless through three innings. Sloppy Brewers defense led to a big inning for the Cubs against Adrian Houser in the 4th. Two errors combined with run-scoring hits from Jason Heyward, Victor Caratini, and Ian Happ gave the road team a 5-0 lead.
Chicago turned the game into a rout in the 5th inning thanks to some Javy Báez magic. Kyle Schwarber walked and moved to third on a Báez hustle double. Jason Kipnis hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Schwarber and allow Javy to tag to third. When Milwaukee tried to appeal his tag, the Cubs shortstop broke for home and scored.
David Bote homered later in the frame and 9-0 was more than enough for Alec Mills. He had command of all his pitches and was getting a ton of outs on the ground. As the innings passed, it became clear that this was no ordinary outing.
Mills, who had only one complete game in his professional career, took a no-hitter into the 9th inning. It was only fitting that the final out of the no-no came on a ground ball to short and truly improbable history was made. (Box score)
Why the Cubs Won
They jumped all over the Brewers errors to build a big lead. And Mills was, well, unhittable.
Key Moment
Avisail Garcia hit a grounder to short in the 6th inning that Báez bobbled before recovering and throwing to get him out by half a step, keeping the no-hitter alive.
Stats That Matter
- Mills line speaks for itself: 9 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 5 K, and 3 BB.
- Heyward walked twice and had two hits as he stays red-hot.
- Javy’s day shows how valuable he can be even if his bat is failing him.
Bottom Line
The Cubs did what they needed to do and dealt a big blow to the Brewers playoff hopes. A series that looked hopeless entering the 9th inning Saturday night, turned out to be a great success. As for Alec Mills, awesome to see this from a guy who has worked very hard to make the majors. Truly unforgettable.
On Deck
The Cubs return to Wrigley Field for two with Cleveland beginning Tuesday at 7:15pm CT. Yu Darvish and Carlos Carrasco are the pitchers in a game airing on Marquee.
