In order to make room on the 40-man roster, Mark Zagunis has been designated for assignment. And in order to make room on the 25-man roster, David Bote has been optioned to Triple-A Iowa.

That’s a tough break for Bote, who will now have to remain down for 10 days, but he’ll get playing time with the I-Cubs playing through the weekend before opening the Pacific Coast League playoffs. Zagunis could still return to the organization if he clears waivers, but there’s not much of a future for him in Chicago given the team’s makeup.
Zobrist will be available for Sunday’s game and could even be in the lineup, but Joe Maddon may choose to hold him back with lefty Gio González on the mound. Even if he’s not quite the same hitter he once was, the 38-year-old brings a professional approach and positive attitude to the clubhouse.
