Live From Arizona: Epstein Named MLB Exec of Year, Ian Happ Goes Yard, Cubs Exec Departs For Dbacks
Good afternoon from Arizona. The hot stove continues to heat up and there are certainly going to be some big stories percolating up soon as the window to sign free agents is now open beginning at 12:01 a.m. on November 8.
- Sporting News has named Theo Epstein MLB Executive of the Year (read the article here). He was selected by a panel of his peers, 56 major league executives. It’s quite an honor for Theo and understandably so, particularly given what he has accomplished in five short years with the Chicago Cubs. When Epstein was first hired in October 2011 he stated,”I firmly believe that we can preserve the things that make the Cubs so special and over time build a consistent winner, a team that will be playing baseball in October consistently and a team that will ultimately win the World Series.” I can honestly say, every single Cubs fan will love this man forever.
- Both Eloy Jimenez and Ian Happ got playing time in the Arizona Fall League yesterday, with Jimenez going 0-for-1 and Happ going 2-for-3 with 1R, 2RBI, 1BB, including a triple. Today’s game is underway and Ian Happ is 1-for-1 with 2R, 1RBI, 1BB and that includes his first AFL home run. Guy’s pretty good.
#Cubs top prospect (@MLB No. 21) Ian Happ goes yard. 1st AFL homer, but he’s ?n’ up. 4 for his last 8. Gameday: https://t.co/6qQrXfZdfh pic.twitter.com/L3WdkVFsjK

- The Arizona Diamondbacks, who are in the midst an all-out front office redo, have named (former) Cubs Director, Professional Scouting, Jared Porter as their new SVP and assistant GM. It’s a huge promotion for a talented executive, so congrats goes out to Jared. Porter joined the Cubs in September of 2015 after spending 12 seasons with the Boston Red Sox.
#Dbacks name Jared Porter as SVP & Asst. GM, promote Mike Bell to VP, Player Development and name Josh Barfield as Asst. Dir., Pro Scouting.
