Soler 450-Foot Bomb Lifts Cubs to 13th Win in August (VIDEO)
When Jorge Soler gets ahold of it, watch out. Tonight he slammed a 450-foot three-run home run to cap off the Cubs’ five-run first inning. And this one was literally over before if even started.
Once he was spotted a five-run first inning lead, Jon Lester (13-4, 2.86 ERA) was on complete cruise control. He lasted 6 2/3 innings and surrendered one run when Keon Broxton singled and promptly stole second and third base before he was driven in on a ground-out to Lester.
Cubs win big, 6-1 (Box Score).
Stats that mattered
- Lester was so good – 6.2IP, 1R, 3H, 2BB, 7Ks
- Carl Edwards, Jr. and Travis Wood cleaned up the scraps – 2.1IP, 0R, 1H, 2Ks
- Jorge Soler has been a monster since his return from the DL, batting .360/.429/.760 – 2-for-4, 1R, 3RBI, HR
- Grandpa Ross got in the mix too – 1-for-2, 1R, 1RBI, 2BB, HR
Bottom line
The Cubs have been taking care of business so far in this series. It’s a series that, coming into, you though they should win 3-of-4. They’ve already won three straight and now will be going for the sweep tomorrow afternoon. It would be a good way to end the ten-game home stand and to begin the nine-game road trip.
This is a critical part of the season where, if the Cubs keep winning, they could put the division away early, relieve the pressure of a pennant chase, and focus on getting ready for the playoffs. This next game and the upcoming road trip will loom large if they are able to put the hammer down.
Next up
The Cubs have one last game on this home stand and it’s against the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday afternoon at 1:20 PM CDT. Unfortunately for the Brewers, Jake Arrieta (14-5, 2.55 ERA) will be on the hill for the Cubs.
