Mid-Game Report: Cubs Getting Lots of Runs, Overpowering the A’s

I figured since tonight was such a late game, and the Cubs have scored so many runs already, I’d try out a mid-game report. Please be sure to let me know if you like the idea. If you do, I’ll do it again.

The Cubs started the game off with a bang when Dexter Fowler bashed a first inning, lead-off home run to deep left center field to start the scoring. It didn’t get any easier for the A’s after that. Anthony Rizzo and Addison Russell both singled, and then Jorge Soler, in his first at-bat since hitting the DL on June 6, crushed a 1-1 pitch over the left field wall for a three-run home run – welcome back, Jorge.

Dexter Fowler and Kris Bryant both hit two-out singles in the top of the second inning, with Bryant’s moving Fowler to third base. Anthony Rizzo came to bat and worked the count full before he flew out, ending the inning for the Cubs.

In the third inning the Cubs put up a another crooked number. Ben Zobrist led off with a double, followed by Addison Russell getting hit by a pitch. After Soler hit into a fielder’s choice, advancing Zobrist to third, Jason Heyward hit a sharp single into left field, scoring Zobrist.

After a wild pitch advanced Soler to third base and Heyward to second, Javier Baez doubled to score them both, making the score 7-0. That’s the score  going into the bottom of the fifth inning.

Lester, meanwhile, has been completely dominating. Through five innings he’s given up only one hit and struck out six. The one hit he surrendered was a line drive down the third base line that was mishandled by Javier Baez on a play he normally makes. It would’ve been close but we’ll never know because he couldn’t come up with it.
