Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (8/19/25, Game 2): Cubs 4, Brewers 1 – Taillon Strong in Return, Completes Doubleheader Sweep
The Brewers and Cubs met in the back half of a doubleheader at Wrigley on Tuesday night after the home team was victorious in game one. Chicago got a quality pitching effort and a couple of big hits to win again.
Milwaukee took the lead against starter Jameson Taillon on an RBI single off the bat of Andrew Vaughn in the top of the 1st inning. The North Siders grabbed a 2-1 lead on Brandon Woodruff in the bottom of the 2nd with a run-scoring bloop single by Owen Caissie and an RBI double from Michael Busch.
Nico Hoerner knocked in another tally with a single against Woodruff in the 5th that made it 3-1 Cubs.
Taillon was excellent after the opening frame, going six strong innings with only the one run allowed. Matt Shaw tripled and came home on a fielder’s choice by Busch to increase the margin to 4-1 in the 6th.
Chicago’s bullpen kept the Brewers off the board the rest of the way, and Andrew Kittredge finished the game to pick up a save. (Box score)
Key Moment
Sal Frelick hit a high fly ball to right against Taylor Rogers with runners on first and third and one out in the top of the 7th. Outfielder Willi Castro caught the ball and fired home to nail the tagging Brice Turang at the plate for an inning-ending double play.
Why the Cubs Won
A quality start and a couple of timely hits were the winning formula Tuesday night.
Stats That Matter
- Just a huge effort by Taillon to help preserve the bullpen in his first game back from injury: 6 IP, 1 R, 5 H, 4 K, 1 BB.
- Dansby Swanson picked up a pair of hits on Tuesday night.
- Busch got on base twice and had two RBIs.
- Caissie was very productive between the two games with three hits and four RBI.
Bottom Line
This was a huge night for the Cubs, who needed something to go right following a difficult stretch of the season. Chicago is probably not going to catch Milwaukee, but they need to start playing better, and this is a good start.
Hopefully, this can build some momentum for Craig Counsell and company.
