Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (4/27/25): Phillies 3, Cubs 1 F/10 – Phillies Outlast Cubs in Extras

The Cubs and Phillies got together in the rubber match of their series at a chilly Wrigley Field Sunday night. Runs were hard to come by all night long, and, unfortunately for Chicago, Philadelphia produced a couple of tallies in extra innings to grab the win.

The North Siders used a two-out rally to grab a 1-0 lead on Aaron Nola in the 2nd inning. Nico Hoerner hit a blooper that fell between a couple of Phillies defenders for a double. Pete Crow-Armstrong followed with a harder hit RBI double to score Hoerner.

Philadelphia tied it up in the top of the 3rd when Bryson Stott hit a one-out triple off of Jameson Taillon. Trea Turner hit an RBI single that brought home the runner from third. Both starting pitchers took over from that point and neither squad scored through the next six frames as the game went into extra innings.

Julian Merryweather came on in the 10th inning and did not have it, issuing three walks and giving up the go-ahead sacrifice fly to Alec Bohm. Turner then beat out an infield single on a grounder to third base to put the Phillies ahead 3-1.

The Cubs offense went quietly again in the bottom of the frame and Philadelphia collected the 3-1 victory. (Box score)

Key Moment

Both pitching staffs did an excellent job on Sunday, so it was just a matter of which side faltered first. The Cubs had the first letdown and it cost them the victory.

Why the Cubs Lost

They had just three total hits and one walk in 10 innings.

Stats That Matter

  • Taillon was outstanding in this one and deserved to get the win: 7 IP, 1 R, 5 H, 2 K, 1 BB.
  • PCA hit the ball hard three times but only had one base hit to show for it.

Bottom Line

That was a tough loss for the Cubs and it could’ve gone either way. They have now navigated a very difficult stretch of the schedule with a 17-12 record. Something they absolutely would have taken before the season began. The challenge for Chicago now is to not lose focus against opponents that might not look as daunting on paper. An easy schedule can become very hard if you aren’t playing at the top of your game.

On Deck

After a day off on Monday, the Cubs head to Pittsburgh for three games against the Pirates starting Tuesday at 5:40pm CT. Neither team has named a starter yet for the contest airing on Marquee with radio coverage on 670 The Score.
