Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (3/22/25): Rockies 7, Cubs 3 – Cubs Lose Despite Suzuki Homers
The Cubs had most of their regulars back in the lineup when they battled the Rockies at Sloan Park Saturday afternoon. Jameson Taillon had a rough day that Chicago could not overcome despite a big performance from Seiya Suzuki.
The left fielder put the North Siders on the board in the top of the 1st inning with a solo homer off of Austin Gomber. Colorado got the lead in the following frame via an RBI double by Adael Amador. Hunter Goodman took Taillon deep for a two-run dinger in the 3rd to put the road team ahead 4-1.
Seiya blasted a second home run in the bottom of the 3rd and Michael Busch followed with an RBI double to cut the Cubs’ deficit to 4-3. Michael Toglia and Sam Hilliard hit a pair of homers in the 5th to increase the Rockies’ advantage to 6-3.
Chicago did not score again and Colorado added one more on Toglia’s second home run in the 7th, going on to win 7-3. (Box score)
Key Moment
The Cubs are going to need a big season out of Suzuki, so it was very nice to see him put a charge into a couple of baseballs.
Why the Cubs Lost
A bad starting pitching effort was the difference in this one, putting them in an early hole.
Stats That Matter
- Taillon was victimized by the home run on Saturday, giving up two in his outing: 4.2 IP, 5 R, 6 H, 6 K, and 1 BB.
- Kyle Tucker picked up a single and scored a run.
- Closer Ryan Pressly threw a clean inning of relief.
Bottom Line
We’ll have to hope this clunker was a way for Taillon to get it out of his system before the games count next week. He’s going to be a big factor in the success or failure of the Cubs’ rotation in 2025.
On Deck
The Sacramento A’s head to Sloan Park Sunday afternoon for a game starting at 3:05pm CT with Matthew Boyd getting the start for Chicago.
