Chicago Cubs Lineup (5/29/22): Stroman Pitching, Higgins Catching, Simmons 2B as Cubs Look For Series Sweep over White Sox
With a win today, the Cubs can earn a series sweep over the crosstown Chicago White Sox, which would certainly be nice to hold over the head of that one guy in your office that lives and dies — at least for the last two years — on all that happens on the Southside. It would also be the Cubs’ first sweep of the season and getting that checked off the list before the calendar turns to June sure would be nice.
Marcus Stroman (2-4, 4.71 ERA) will take the ball for the Cubs today, following a dominant effort yesterday by Keegan Thompson and the Cubs’ bullpen. Stroman got a win in his last outing on May 24 against the Cincinnati Reds, giving up two runs over five innings while getting 11 runs from his offense. With a stretch of eight games in seven days lying in front of them, all against the Brewers and Cardinals, getting six or seven innings today from Stroman would go a long way in resting the Cubs’ bullpen heading into what feels like a make or, more likely, break week for the team.
Christopher Morel is once again batting leadoff today and playing center, Willson Contreras follows at DH, Ian Happ is in left and Frank Schwindel is playing first. Patrick Wisdom is at third this afternoon, Rafael Ortega is playing right, Nico Hoerner is at short, P.J. Higgins is catching, Andrelton Simmons is at second for the second time in his career.
Dylan Cease (4-2, 4.24 ERA) gets the start today for the White Sox and he hasn’t been nearly as dominant lately as he was to begin the season. He’s given up 13 runs in his last three outings, which was really two bad starts with a very good start in between, albeit against the lowly Royals. Cease always get plenty of strikeouts but it’s the longball this season that’s been his nemesis. He’s given up homers in only three games this year and those games were by far his worst performances with ERAs of 6.75, 13.50, and 21.00. Hopefully, the wind is blowing out today.
First pitch today is at 1:10pm CT from the Southside. The Cubs feed will be broadcast on Marquee Sports Network and 670 The Score.
