Cubs Roster Update: Clint Frazier Activated, Michael Hermosillo to IL, Brandon Hughes Back to I-Cubs
The Cubs active roster has been a real-life merry-go-round that’s been a little hard to keep track of. A lot going on with injuries, COVID, DFAs, promotions, and the like.
Today, Michael Hermosillo has been removed from the non-designated IL (COVID) and is now right back on the 10-day IL with his prior quad injury. Brandon Hughes, who was never on the 40-man due to replacing a non-designated IL player, is being sent back to Iowa. And we may not see Hughes back up anytime soon since he remains off the 40-man.
Meanwhile, Clint Frazier finally comes off the IL after playing his last game on April 19. There was hope that he could possibly tap into his apparently high ceiling — he was the No. 5 overall pick by Cleveland back in 2013 — but he’s only slashing .143/.250/.248. I have to wonder how long his leash is, particularly when the roster is already pretty crowded, not to mention that Jason Heyward will be returning soon from the IL. Although, I’m pretty sure that now that I’ve written those words Frazier will likely go on a tear soon.
What I’d hate to see is a red-hot Christopher Morel get sent back to Iowa only to keep Frazier and Heyward on the Big Club. We’ll have to see how it plays out.
