Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (5/14/22): Cubs 4, D-Backs 2 – Big Night From Gomes Lifts Cubs to Win
You wouldn’t expect Yan Gomes to lift the Cubs to victory but that’s exactly what happened tonight. Behind a solid outing from Kyle Hendricks, Gomes hit a solo home run in the top of the 4th and singled to score a run in the top of the 9th, driving in two runs in the Cubs’ 4-2 victory.
Hendricks came just one out shy of a quality start tonight when he got pulled in the bottom of the 6th with two outs and a runner on second base. Scott Effross, Daniel Norris, and Mychal Givens combined in relief to pitch 2.1 scoreless innings. Rowan Wick came on in the 9th and gave up two hits and a walk to make things interesting. The D-backs scored a run but that’s all they could muster. (Box Score)
Why the Cubs Won
Solid pitching and timely at-bats. Sounds simple and tonight it was.
Key Moment
With the game tied in the top of the 9th, the Cubs buckled down and locked in. Willson Contreras led off with a walk, Seiya Suzuki lined a single, and Ian Happ walked to load the bases. Gomes singled to score Contreras. Another walk to Ortega scored the Cubs’ third run and a groundout by Jason Heyward plated to the fourth and final run.
Stats That Matter
- Hendricks was very good: 5.2 IP, 1 R, 5 H, 2 K, 2 BB
- Gomes was the MVP tonight: 2-for-4, 1 R, 2 RBI, HR
Bottom Line
The Cubs are in position to win their second consecutive road series and finish this road trip with a record of 4-2. Worst case, they finish .500 and, given how things had been trending heading into this road trip, you have to feel good about where the Cubs stand coming into Sunday.
On Deck
The Cubs close out the series against the Diamondbacks on Sunday at 3:10pm CT. Justin Steele (1-4, 5.32 ERA) will take the mound for the Cubs against Humberto Castellanos (2-1, 4.32 ERA) for the D-backs. The game will be broadcast on Marquee Sports Network and 670 The Score.
