Chicago Cubs Lineup (5/14/22): Suzuki Returns, Contreras Leads Off, Hendricks Pitching
Kyle Hendricks (2-3, 4.38 ERA), is hoping to build off his last start, one that saw him throw a shutout over 8.2 innings while giving up just three hits. Arizona’s offense doesn’t quite possess the same level of talent as the Padres, so it stands to reason that if Hendricks can locate his fastball today he should be very effective.
David Ross is going with red-hot Willson Contreras to lead off and play DH, Seiya Suzuki returns to the lineup batting second playing right, followed by Ian Happ in left, Yan Gomes catching, and Patrick Wisdom at third. Frank Scwhindel is playing first and batting sixth, Jason Heyward follows in center, Jonathan Villar is at second, and Ildemaro Vargas is at short.
Opposing the Cubs is RHP Zac Gallen (2-0, .95 ERA) who’s been extremely effective so far this season. He’s not overpowering, leading with a mid-90s fastball, and then offsetting that with his changeup and curveball. It’s the curveball, arguably his best pitch, that he goes to most often in 2-strike counts, but if his fastball isn’t working to set that pitch up the Cubs can get to him tonight.
First pitch is at 7:10pm CT. The game can be seen on Marquee Sports Network and heard on 670 The Score.
