Final Score: Cubs 12, Pirates 2 – Cubs Win 100 Games in 2016 (VIDEO)
The Cubs win 100 games in 2016 and there’s still 6 games left in the season. This feels like a ‘pinch me’ moment but I assure you it’s all too real. Don’t look now, but the Cubs just might get to my opening day prediction of 105 wins. I sure hope so and there’s no question that there are a lot of people hoping for the same thing. And, by the way, the last time the Cubs won over 100 games, in 1935, they made it to the World Series.
The Chicago Cubs (100-56) simply dominated the Pittsburgh Pirates (77-79) in every way tonight. It was a clinic. The Pirates didn’t do anything to help themselves either, although it didn’t really seem like there was much they could’ve done.
After the Cubs scored a run in the top of the first inning they put four more runs on the board in the top of the fourth inning when Javy Baez roped a grand slam over the left field wall. The Cubs were up 5-0 and firmly in control.

In the top of the sixth inning the Cubs added 6 more runs. Kris Bryant homered, his 39th of the year, to drive in Chris Coghlan to start off the scoring in the inning. For Bryant, he finally eclipsed the 100 RBI mark with the hit, driving in his 100th and 101st RBI of the year.
Albert Almora, Jr. also drove in a run in the inning when he hit a double down the right field line to score Jason Heyward, who had also driven in a run earlier in the inning when he reached base on a throwing error. Javier Baez then singled to drive in his 5th and 6th RBI of the game and the blowout was on.
The Cubs go on to win their 100th win big, by the score of 12-2 (Box Score).
Not to be overlooked, in fact he was probably the highlight of the game, Kyle Hendricks (16-8, 1.99 ERA) was as good as ever. It really does seem like he’s getting better, and that’s really hard to imagine, not to mention probably pretty scary to the rest of the teams in the league.
He lasted six innings and struck out five batters while scattering 7 hits. He managed to get out of a bases loaded jam, after back-to-back-to-back singles, in the bottom of the sixth inning to maintain the shutout.
Late back-to-back home runs off Hector Rondon would cost the Cubs the shutout. Hector got out of the eighth inning without surrendering any more damage but he’s had a tough time since his return from the DL.
Stats that matter
- Hendricks was filthy – 6.0IP, 0R, 7H, 5Ks, and no walks
- Congrats to KB on breaking past 100 RBI – 2-for-4, 1R, 2RBI, HR
- Javy Baez was an absolute beast – 2-for-5, 1R, 6RBI, HR
- Chris Coghlan did well in the lead-off spot – 2-for-4, 2R, 2BB
- Hewyard is slashing .270/.386/.405 over his last 11 games – 2-for-4, 2R, 2RBI, 1BB, 2B
- Albert Almora had a big night – 3-for-6, 3R, 1RBI
Bottom line
The Cubs have just accomplished yet another major goal of the season, winning 100 games. What an incredible feat and it’s only been done by five other Chicago Cubs’ clubs – 1906 (116), 1907 (107), 1909 (104), 1910 (104), and 1935 (100).
