Williams Signs 3-Year, $45M Deal with Mets

The Mets made a big splash on Monday evening, signing reliever Devin Williams to a three-year deal.

The reliever market hasn’t seen much action yet, although the Cubs helped kick things off by signing Phil Maton less than two weeks ago. Williams continues the trend of players who were traded to the New York Yankees and then left in free agency for the crosstown-rival Mets just a year later. Juan Soto is the most notable example of this happening previously, but it remains a fun coincidence.

The price tag of $45 million, along with the three-year term, likely took the Cubs out of contention for Williams’ services. Instead, he provides David Stearns with a cushion in case the Mets aren’t able to re-sign Edwin Díaz.
