Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (9/9/25): Cubs 6, Braves 1 – Horton Terrific Again in Win
The Cubs and Braves met for the second game of their series on a lovely Tuesday night at Truist Park. It was a very close contest most of the way before Chicago had a much-needed big inning to put away the victory.
The North Siders loaded the bases with nobody out against Spencer Strider in the top of the 1st inning, but only came away with a sacrifice fly by Pete Crow-Armstrong to go up 1-0. Cade Horton continued his excellent pitching in the second half, throwing three shutout frames.
PCA doubled the Cubs’ lead with a bloop single in the top of the 4th inning. Atlanta answered back in the bottom of the frame with a run-scoring single by Jurickson Profar to cut the margin to 2-1. Horton protected that advantage very well, pitching all the way into the 7th.
Chicago finally broke through against former Reds closer Alexis Díaz in the top of the 8th with Dansby Swanson drawing a bases-loaded walk. Connor Seabold relieved Díaz, and Matt Shaw greeted him with a single that brought home two runs, with a third coming in on a Braves error to put the road team on top 6-1.
Ben Brown closed out the 9th as the North Siders finished off the win. (Box score)
Key Moment
It was very important for the Cubs to get some insurance to ease the burden on the bullpen, and they did just that with that four-spot in the 8th.
Why the Cubs Won
Another excellent starting pitching effort and they finally got a crooked number late against a bad opposing bullpen.
Stats That Matter
- Horton continues to dominate on the mound: 6.1 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 2 K, 0 BB.
- PCA had two RBI, reached base three times, and stole two bases.
- Ian Happ had a pair of hits, including a double, on Tuesday.
Bottom Line
With all of the offensive issues the Cubs are dealing with, it’s kind of gone unnoticed that the starting rotation has been very good lately. If they can get any kind of run support, they could be a difficult team to play in October. That is a tremendously big if at the moment, but things might get fun again if it happens.
On Deck
The rubber match of the series is Wednesday night at 6:15pm CT. Jameson Taillon returns from injury to face tough lefty Chris Sale in a game available on Marquee with a radio feed on 670 The Score.
